The UK's Farewell to Fluorescent Lighting

The Brighter  Transition

For years, fluorescent lighting has been a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, illuminating offices, homes, and commercial spaces.

But in September 2023, the UK said its goodbyes to fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). This change was brought about by the EU Eco-design Directive, a significant step towards a more sustainable future.

Karen Smith from Bright Spark Electrical Services – “Your Local Electrician” from the Tonbridge, Crowborough, Sevenoaks  & Tunbridge Wells area of Kent, will  explore the reasons behind this transition, its ripple effects, and the alternatives that are now illuminating our path ahead!

The EU Eco-design Directive:

Shining Light on Sustainability

The EU Eco-design Directive is a beacon of environmental consciousness, designed to reduce energy consumption and minimize the environmental footprint of energy-related products. As part of this directive, fluorescent tubes and Compact Fluorescent (CFL’s) have been phased out in the UK, in line with the broader mission of promoting energy-efficient lighting solutions.

The Knock-On Effect: A Brighter, Greener Future

The cessation of fluorescent lighting sales has created a ripple effect across various sectors:

  1. Environmental Benefits: This transition marks a win for the environment. Reduced energy consumption and the elimination of hazardous materials like mercury in fluorescent lighting contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.
  2. Technological Advancements: Manufacturers are now focusing on innovation to meet the growing demand for energy-efficient lighting. This has led to the development of more sustainable and advanced lighting technologies.

How we find the  Alternatives:

Lighting the Way Forward

With fluorescent lighting out of the picture, Bright Spark Electrical Services customers have a range of alternatives for you to consider, each with its unique set of advantages and disadvantages:

LED Lighting

“The Eco-Friendly Superstar”

    • Benefits:
      • Energy Efficiency: LED lights are highly energy-efficient, reducing your electricity bills and carbon footprint.
      • Longevity: LEDs have an exceptionally long lifespan, often lasting tens of thousands of hours.
      • Versatility: LED technology allows for a wide range of colour temperatures with output colours  of:
      •  “Warm white” (similar to the warm orange glow of the traditional light bulbs we all know)  3000Kelvin / 3000K.
      • Cool / Neutral white (the brighter light bulbs), which are used in Offices, Kitchens & Bathrooms, 4000Kelvin /4000K
      • “Day light”, these tend to be the ones with a Blueish hint, 6500Kelvin 6500K, where like “Marmite” you either love them or hate them, and the choice of these is all down to your various applications around your home or business.
      • Environmentally Friendly: LEDs are free from hazardous materials, making them safe for the environment.
    • Disadvantages:
      • Initial Cost: While LEDs save money in the long run, their upfront cost can be higher than traditional bulbs we have purchased in the past.
      • Light Quality: Some Customers find the quality of LED light different from the warm glow of an incandescent.
However, advancements have improved this aspect.

Halogen Bulbs

A Familiar Face in light Bulbs over the years

However these have been phase out since September 2021

“If you can get them still – build up a collection for your light fittings particularly the Capsule Bulbs – Now” says Karen at Bright Spark.

  • Benefits:
      • Affordability: Halogen bulbs are budget-friendly and offer decent energy efficiency.
      • Instant Light: They provide instant brightness, suitable for various applications.
  • Disadvantages:
      • Energy Consumption: Halogens are not as energy-efficient as LEDs, leading to higher electricity bills.
      • Heat Emission: They emit a significant amount of heat, making them less suitable for enclosed fixtures.

Can you replace halogen capsule Bulbs with LED?

Changing a halogen capsule bulb is very easy. In order to save on your energy costs, you can replace a halogen bulb directly with an LED bulb.

In addition, LED lights last on average around 25 times longer than a halogen bulb.

When they were first introduced, they were not “pretty” to look at, but as time & technology have moved on, the replacement Capsule LED bulbs are getting closer to mimic the style of the Halogen versions.

Lighting the Way to a Sustainable Future

As we bid farewell to Fluorescent & Halogen lighting, we usher in a new era of illumination that is energy-efficient, environmentally conscious, and versatile.

Thank you for attending my “Emergency Call out” there was smoke coming out of my socket. I telephoned at least 15 electricians after 7:15pm (in the evening) when we discovered the smoke coming out of the Socket. Their phones not even being answered. The next on my list was Bright Sparks, who were the only ones to answer the call - literally within a couple of rings, and was answered by a lovely lady who reassured me that help would be on the way. The Call was sent to your emergency electrician who called back within 15 minutes, and was able to attend within the hour, and fix the problem. Thank you. Excellent Service
