If you've had electrical work done and seen "BS 7671" on your certificate, that's the rulebook. It's the national standard every NICEIC electrician in the UK works to, covering everything from a single socket to a full rewire, an EICR to an EV charger installation.
BS 7671, published by the IET, is formally called the Requirements for Electrical Installations — most people in the trade just call it "the Regs." It sets out how electrical installations should be designed, installed, inspected and tested to be safe. We're currently on the 18th Edition, which has been in place since 2018 and gets periodically updated through amendments as technology and best practice move on — most recently to reflect things like battery storage and EV charging becoming part of everyday work.
Every EICR, consumer unit change, rewire and new circuit we carry out is certified against BS 7671. It's what "NICEIC registered" and "Part P compliant" actually mean in practice — an independent standard, not just our own judgement, deciding what's safe. If a certificate references BS 7671, it's confirming the work meets that national benchmark, not just Bright Spark's opinion of a good job.
Yes — periodically, through amendments that update or add to the 18th Edition without replacing it outright. The current version in use is BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, and it covers areas like battery storage systems, earthing for IT and network equipment, and how EICR findings get classified. We keep our qualifications and CPD current with whichever amendment is live, so you don't need to track this yourself — it's built into how we certify every job.
No. Amendments aren't retrospective — a certificate issued correctly under an earlier version of BS 7671 stays valid. When you're next due an EICR or new work, it'll simply be tested and certified against whichever version is current at the time.
Ask if they're NICEIC registered. Scheme rules require registered businesses to hold and work to the current edition and amendments of BS 7671, and it's checked as part of ongoing assessment — it's not optional. All our electricians hold current 18th Edition qualifications, and every job is certified against whichever version of the standard is current on the day.

Yes. Work correctly certified under an earlier amendment remains valid; the standard isn't applied retrospectively.
No, not on its own. EICRs are due on their normal cycle (typically every 5 years for homeowners, or every 5 years or change of tenancy for rented properties). When yours is next due, it'll be tested against whichever standard is current then.
An edition is a full rewrite of the Wiring Regulations. An amendment updates and adds to the current edition without replacing it — several amendments can sit within one edition over the years.
Only if it changes the design of the job — for example, a home battery storage system now falls under its own dedicated chapter. Day-to-day requirements for most standard domestic work are unaffected, and we'll flag it in your quote if it's relevant to your specific job.
