How much does it cost to raise a socket above a skirting board?

Removing a Socket from a Skirting Board & Moving It Higher Up the Wall

Typical cost from £165 + VAT

Socket above Skirting Board

Sockets fixed to skirting boards are common in older properties, but they’re no longer considered best practice. They’re more vulnerable to being knocked, damaged by hoovers or furniture, and can be awkward to use.

At Bright Spark Electrician, we can safely remove these old skirting-board sockets and install new, neater, and safer sockets at a modern height on the wall. For a straightforward like‑for‑like move, prices typically start from £165 + VAT, depending on access, wall construction, and the exact work required. (Pricing based as of April 2026)

What We Do

1. Remove the existing socket
We carefully remove the existing surface-mounted double socket outlet from the skirting board, making sure the power is safely isolated and the existing wiring is checked.

2. Extend the cables
The existing cables are extended from behind the skirting board and routed up into the wall to the new socket position. All work is carried out in line with current wiring regulations and safe cable routes.

3. Install a new flush-mounted socket
We supply and install a new flush-mounted double socket outlet above the skirting board. This provides a neater finish and reduces the risk of the socket or plugged-in leads being knocked by furniture, hoovers, or day-to-day use.

4. Test and commission
Once installed, we fully test and commission the new socket to confirm it is wired correctly, safely earthed, and operating as it should. Test results are recorded in line with current electrical standards.

Access, Making Good & Finishing

  • Clear access
The customer is responsible for ensuring clear access to the working areas specified, including around sockets, skirting boards, and cable routes.

  • Holes through walls/ceilings
If access is needed to place equipment or cabling through walls or ceilings, any holes we create will be refilled with white filling plaster.
Final decorative filling, sanding, and decoration will be carried out by others.

  • Chasing cables into solid walls
Where cables are chased into solid walls, they will be enclosed in protective capping.
Chases will be filled with a light plaster fill, with further preparation and decoration by others.

Waste Removal & Environmental Responsibility

We remove electrical fittings and packaging from the site in a safe and ethical manner.
We are registered waste carriers (Registration CBDU288762 with the Environment Agency) for materials deemed waste during the course of our work.
