With the demise of the standard incandescent light bulbs, the move has been over to LED light bulbs. However many of the original type of dimmer switches do not work with the new LED lightbulbs. The manufacturers in the blurb either in the instructions or in the sales literature mention that the LED lightbulbs can only be dimmed with LED Traic  dimmers.

A Traic Dimmer from the outside looks like any other Dimmer switch.

At Bright Spark Electrical Services, we can supply & replace the complete Dimmer switch, with a new faceplate,   but saving some money we often replace the module behind the face plate, retaining your original dimmer switch.

Sometime we even change the Dimmer module in a new dimmer switch - often the case when customers have provided us with dimmer switches to save money on the cost of the install, having picked them up cheaply on line, or at the DIY store.

So in answer to your question.  A Traic dimmer is an LED compatible dimmer switch, which can deal with the low loads of a LED light bulb.

(Now the Technical bit)   A  trailing / leading edge dimmer  switch features intelligent overload protection, short circuit protection and, most importantly, intelligent load detection.

This then makes the dimmer extremely versatile because it is able to adapt in response to the lighting load to achieve the best possible dimming performance.

At Bright Spark over the years we have installed many types of LED compatible dimmer switches.  However there is only one brand, that we use, which we know, and we trust. 

We have very few recalls back to.  The recalls are very often user error, where the “intelligent switching” gets messed up by impatient people turning on the lights rapidly, or children playing with the dimmer switches. 

Please be assured the the dimmers we install may be of a premium as opposed to the “Cheap” dimmers which can be found, but for peace of mind, for a little more than “Normal Dimmers”  they are very good.
