How Much Does It Cost to Replace Ceiling Downlights?
If you've got existing recessed downlights and you're thinking about upgrading them, the good news is that — in most cases — the cabling is already there. Replacing halogen downlights with LED is one of the most common jobs we carry out across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and Crowborough, and it's usually more straightforward than people expect.
That said, no two installations are identical. Here's what you need to know before you get a price.
What Affects the Cost
Even when the existing wiring is in place and there's reasonable access above the ceiling, the job varies. Ceiling material, void depth, the condition of the existing fittings and the number of lights all play a part. That's why we quote per job rather than giving a blanket figure over the phone.
What a Typical Four-Light Replacement Includes
Supply and installation of four recessed LED downlights — to existing positions with cabling already in place — typically starts from around £178 + VAT.
Here's what that covers:
The downlights themselves — integrated, fire-rated LED fittings. Fire-rated means the fitting maintains the fire integrity of your ceiling, which matters in most domestic properties and is essential where building regulations apply.
Adjustable colour temperature, set at the time of installation. You choose between warm white, neutral white, or daylight — whichever suits the room. Warm white works well in living rooms and bedrooms, neutral white is popular in kitchens, and daylight suits bathrooms and workspaces where you want a crisper, brighter light.
Low energy LED throughout — significantly more efficient than the old halogen GU10s most people are replacing, and they run cool, which extends the life of the fitting and reduces the risk of heat damage above the ceiling.
Disposal of your old fittings to a waste facility registered with the Environment Agency — properly, not just a bag left on site.
All work is carried out by NICEIC registered electricians, so you have the assurance that the installation meets current standards.
If the existing cabling needs remedial work, the circuit needs extending, or access is difficult — a shallow ceiling void, plasterboard complications, or joists blocking the positions — that will affect the price. We'll always tell you upfront before anything is agreed.
How We Fix a Ceiling Hole That's Too Large for a New Downlight
Where the existing hole is oversized — whether through heat damage to the plaster around the downlight or inconsistent cutting over the years — we fit an oversized downlight trim ring directly to the ceiling before the new fitting goes in. The trim ring cover plate sits flush against the ceiling, conceals the existing hole, and neatens up any heat-damaged or uneven plaster around it. The new LED downlight then clips into the ring, and from the floor the finish looks clean and deliberate.
It's a straightforward fix that avoids the cost and disruption of bringing a plasterer in to fill and repaint a handful of ceiling holes. We assess every position on site and flag it before we proceed — no surprises on the day.
