Downlights in the kitchen are a matter of customer choice, and it is normally recommended that they be distanced around 1 m to 1.5 m apart.
However the choice of LED lightbulbs also play a great importance with a wider been angle you may not need so many downlights. But you do need to ensure that when replacing the lightbulbs when they eventually go (this could be 30,000 hours plus) you get a similar or same style LED light bulb to replace it.
A great lighting effects without using pendant lights over the central island can be for a separate circuit with downlights and having a narrow beam angle which just focuses over the central island
