20 Amp Double Pole Switches

Where You’ll See 20A DP Switches in Real Homes

Bright Spark Electrical Services regularly encounters and installs these switches in homes across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Crowborough and the surrounding areas. Common scenarios include:

  1. Immersion Heater / Hot Water Cylinder
  • Usually on its own radial circuit from the consumer unit.
  • 20A DP switch with neon, often labelled “WATER HEATER”.
  • Typically:
    • On the landing near the airing cupboard, or
    • Just inside or just outside the cupboard.

This gives easy access to isolation without opening cylinder panels.

  1. Central Heating / Boilers

Boilers are frequently fed via a switched fused spur (13A FCU), but you might also see 20A DP switches used as isolators in some installations, especially where:

  • The load is higher or
  • The manufacturer’s instructions allow or require a DP switch rather than an FCU (for example when protection is already suitably arranged elsewhere).

Location:

  • Normally in the same room as the boiler or immediately adjacent.
  • Must be accessible and not hidden behind fixed cupboards without clear access.
  1. Fixed Kitchen Appliances

You may see 20A DP switches for:

  • Built-in ovens under ~3kW – some are designed to be on 16A/20A radial circuits.
  • Under-sink water heaters – often around 2kW.
  • Fixed cooker hoods or large extractors – especially in commercial-style domestic kitchens.

Common arrangements:

  • A 20A DP switch with flex outlet, feeding a short flexible cable to the appliance.
  • Mounted in an adjacent cupboard or on a nearby wall, clearly labelled.
  1. Older or Lower Power Showers

Modern electric showers are nearly always supplied via a 40–50A MCB and a 45A DP shower isolator (usually a pull-cord in the bathroom).

However, in older installations or where lower-power showers were fitted, you may see:

  • 20A or 30A DP switches as isolators.

In any case, if the shower is upgraded to a higher kW rating, the circuit and isolation also need re-assessing and usually upgrading.

  1. Small Commercial / Light Industrial Settings

In commercial properties around Kent and Sussex – e.g. offices, small workshops, salons – 20A DP switches often provide local isolation for:

  • Hand dryers
  • Panel heaters
  • Vending machines
  • Water heaters

These are often metal-clad fittings in:

  • Plant rooms
  • Service corridors
  • Utility areas

Metal-clad accessories offer better impact resistance and are suitable where there’s a greater risk of knocks and scrapes.

Practical Considerations for Homeowners

If you’re a homeowner or landlord, you don’t need to know every detail of BS 7671, but it helps to understand a few practical points about your 20A DP switches.

  1. When Should You Use Them?

Use the switch:

  • To turn appliances off when not needed (e.g. immersion heater if you don’t use it daily).
  • Before attempting any very minor, user-level maintenance such as:
    • Resetting an accessible thermostat (if the manufacturer says this is user-serviceable).
  • Checking for obvious signs of damage.

But always remember:

  • Turning the switch off is not a substitute for proper isolation and testing by a qualified electrician when any real work is needed inside the appliance or on the wiring.
  1. Common Issues Homeowners Notice

You might need a qualified electrician (like Bright Spark Electrical Service) if you see:

  • Neon lit when it shouldn’t be – e.g. switch OFF but neon glowing faintly:
    • Could be harmless induced voltages or wiring quirks.
    • Could also indicate a miswired switch or a shared neutral problem.
  • Burning smell, heat, or discolouration around the switch:
    • Terminals may be loose.
    • Contacts may be arcing or overheating.
  • Intermittent operation – appliance only turns on if the switch is wiggled:
    • Worn or damaged internal contacts.
    • Loose terminals requiring inspection.

Any of these signs justify turning the circuit off at the consumer unit and getting it checked promptly.

  1. Replacement and Upgrades

Reasons to consider replacing or upgrading a 20A DP switch include:

  • Physical damage (cracked, loose, or broken rocker).
  • Discolouration from heat or UV.
  • Rattling or obvious movement of internal parts.
  • Upgrading the load (for example, fitting a more powerful heater that exceeds 20A rating)

An electrician will:

  • Confirm the correct rating and type required.
  • Inspect the cable size, circuit protection, and earthing.
  • Ensure compliance with the latest edition of BS 7671 and manufacturer instructions.

Design Details Electricians Think About

When Bright Spark designs or upgrades circuits in homes around Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and Crowborough, a few technical decisions go on behind the scenes:

  1. Circuit Type and Cable Size

For a 20A DP switch application, typical choices include:

  • Radial circuits:
    • 2.5mm² T&E on a 16A or 20A MCB/RCBO.
    • Direct run from consumer unit to the appliance via the switch.
  • In some cases where loads are modest and distances short, the designer might specify different cable sizes based on:
    • Installation method (clipped direct, in insulation, in trunking).
    • Ambient temperature.
    • Grouping with other cables.
  1. Back Box Depth and Accessory Type

20A DP switches usually require:

  • 25–35mm deep back boxes – enough room for:
    • The mechanism.
    • Safe bending radius of 2.5mm² conductors.
    • Secure termination and no over-stressing of cables.

Metal or plastic?

  • Plastic (white moulded) – common in domestic habitable rooms.
  • Metal-clad – preferred in garages, workshops, utility areas and commercial settings where durability matters.
  1. Labelling and Position

Good practice:

  • Clear labelling of the switch (e.g. “Water Heater”, “Oven Isolator”).
  • Positioning:
    • Readily accessible.
    • Not above a hob or where reaching is unsafe.
    • Within a reasonable distance of the appliance, often within 2m horizontally (subject to manufacturer guidance and electrical design).
  1. Coordination With RCD/RCBO Protection

Nowadays most new or altered circuits in domestic premises:

  • Are RCD protected (either via separate RCDs or RCBOs).

The 20A DP switch:

  • Does not replace the RCD/RCBO, but works in addition:
    • MCB/RCBO: overcurrent and fault protection.
    • RCD: protection against electric shock from earth faults.
    • 20A DP switch: local isolation and everyday control.

When to Call a Qualified Electrician

You should always involve a competent electrician for:

  • Installing or replacing a 20A DP switch.
  • Adding new circuits for immersion heaters, boilers, ovens, showers or other fixed loads.
  • Investigating tripping issues, overheating, or irregular behaviour of high-power appliances.
  • Ensuring compliance with BS 7671 and Part P of the Building Regulations.

At Bright Spark Electrical Service, we regularly:

  • Design and install new circuits for water heaters, boilers, and kitchens.
  • Replace worn or unsafe switches and accessories.
  • Test and inspect existing wiring to ensure it’s still safe and up to standard.
  • Advise homeowners and landlords across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Crowborough and the nearby areas about the safest, most compliant options for their particular property.

Key Takeaways

To summarise the essentials about 20A double pole switches in UK homes:

  • What they are
A 20A DP switch is a robust, wall-mounted isolator that breaks both live and neutral together, rated up to 20A at 230–240V AC.
  • Where you see them
Commonly used for immersion heaters, some boilers, under-sink water heaters, certain built-in ovens, larger extract fans and in light commercial settings.
  • Why double pole matters
    • Neutral can become live under fault conditions.
    • BS 7671 requires means of isolation that disconnect all live conductors.
    • DP switching ensures full isolation – much safer for maintenance and fault finding.
  • Why 20A (and not just 13A fuses)
    • Some fixed appliances legitimately draw more than 13A.
    • 20A DP switches allow those loads to be hard-wired and protected appropriately by the MCB/RCBO.
  • Your role as a homeowner
    • Use these switches for normal on/off control and as a first step before any basic user maintenance.
    • Watch for signs of damage, overheating or odd behaviour.
    • Always call a qualified electrician for installation, alteration, or any internal work on high-power appliances or their wiring.

If you’d like specific advice about an immersion heater, boiler, oven or shower in your property – or you’re unsure whether an existing switch is correctly rated and safely installed – Bright Spark Electrical Service can inspect, test, and, if needed, upgrade your wiring to current standards across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Crowborough and the surrounding areas.

I had a number of light fittings that weren't working and, on a recommendation from a friend, called Bright Spark. Karen called in to evaluate and price the work the same day and sent one of her colleagues, to carry it out before the end of the week. It was a very impressive response and the work was done to an excellent standard. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Bright Spark, and it's reassuring to know such a reliable firm exists the next time I need an electrician.

Philip, Seal

Phil, from Bright Sparks arrived promptly, was really polite, cracked on with his job and gave us a really good brief on what he'd done and why it was needed which was then followed up with a thorough report. Bright Sparks have been absolutely superb and not only are they saved in my phone but also I'd recommend them to friends and family. Thanks guys. P.s. you were up front and transparent about costs too.
