Choosing the Right Extractor Fan for a W/C

Extractor fans are used to remove air and odours from kitchens, bathrooms and toilets.

Extractor fans can be fitted inside or outside a building; Extractor fan units ventilate enclosed spaces to the exterior via windows or ducting systems.

Extractor fans are powered either by an electric motor or a quiet centrifugal fan enclosed in a grille and flue.

Extractor fan units come in different types:

ceiling mounted, sash mounted (fitted inside timber windows),

  • flueless ducted (ducted externally to the exterior of the building)
  • flued ducted (ducted internally to the room)

Extractor fans work as a vacuum cleaner, pulling air into the unit. Extractor fans should be fitted according to manufacturer's installation instructions and guidelines.

Extractor fans do not work well if there is not enough ventilation at the top of the room. If properly installed and maintained, Extractor fans can help to keep bathrooms and toilets free from smells. Extractor fan effectiveness may decrease with age, so you should replace or service an Extractor fan regularly.

Extractor fans work best in dry conditions.

Extractor fan effectiveness will decrease on damp days because the moisture in the air condenses on cold Extractor fan blades. If Extractor fans are not used Extractor fan efficiency will deteriorate over time, so it is important to use the Extractors when needed. , Extractor fans should be fitted according to the manufacturer's instructions and guidelines. Extractors can make you feel colder when they are running; Extractors reduce warm moist air to dehumidify the room.

The Extractor fan blades rotate anti-clockwise whereas installation is clockwise Extractor fan body in the Extractor fan housing. Extractors should be cleaned regularly because Extractor fans work much more efficiently when clean.

To conclude:

Extractor fans are an effective way to remove air and odours from kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets Extractor fans work best in dry conditions because the moisture in the Extractor fan blades rotate, pulling the stale air out via the Extractor fan housing. Extractors should be cleaned regularly because Extractor fans work much more efficiently when they are not clogged with dirt Extractor fans need proper ventilation because Extractors work by extracting air, and if there is no way for the Extractor fan to release this air, it will eventually build up pressure, sometimes causing the Extractor fan unit to explode

I had an emergency situation arising from a constantly tripping appliance. A call to Bright Sparks, who have helped me before, led me to their website’s ‘Knowledge Centre’ and although I’ve used similar help sites before this was excellent – clear, well laid out, and logically organised – and as someone with zero electrical knowledge I managed to find the fault myself! I followed up the situation on the phone and got more advice. Really impressed by the Bright Sparks service and will continue to use them and their Knowledge Centre again in the future.

"I have had Bright Sparks at my property twice in the last six months to complete some electrical work. I have been blown away by the innovative efficient way I am communicated with the efficiency and ease of the process. The work has been carried out to a more than satisfactory standard and I found it to be extremely competitively priced. It is by far the best experience I have had with any service provider in forever. Thanks guys."

We recently appointed Bright Spark Electrical Services for upgrading our home electrics. Initially their quotation submitted was very professional, every detail of work to be carried out was itemised. The work was completed very efficiently and very speedily. In fact a good tidy electrical job. I believe in giving credit where it is due I would recommend Bright Spark Electrical Services not only for the work completed in my home, but also for their impressive record, which can be easily checked.

We have been very impressed by Bright Spark Electrical Services. Karen Smith visited us to discuss our requirements and gave advice which cut our costs. The work was carried quickly and on time with excellent results. The areas affected were clean and tidy when the work was completed. We had a slight problem with a unit but it was dealt with as soon as it was reported. I have no hesitation in recommending this company and will definitely contact them again for any further electrical problems.
