What do the Codes mean on my Electrical Test Certificate ?

After the inspection

After the inspection has been completed you will be issued with a report (EICR) on the condition of the electrical installation, although this will be described as Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory, it contains detailed information on whether the installation is suitable for continued use and may have particular observations coded as follows:

  • C1 - Danger Present

  • C2 - Potentially Dangerous

  • C3 - Requires Improvement

  • FI - Further Investigation Required

  • C1 indicates there is a Danger Present and immediate action should be taken, the electrician should not wait to issue the paperwork, the defect should be rectified or the circuit isolated immediately

  • C2 indicates that although the defect is not currently dangerous, under fault conditions it could pose a hazard to users of the installation

  • C3 - indicates that the defect, whilst is not considered to be a source of immediate or potential danger, improvement would contribute to a significant enhancement of the safety of the electrical installation. This is often due to new regulations that have been put in place since the original installation.

What do I do, if I have Codes on my Report?

At Bright Spark Electrical services, where we have carried out a electrical test and inspection on the property, should we find that we have a number of Code 1, Code 2, and Code 3 items.

As a matter of course we very soon afterwards provide the client asking for the report and in-depth quotation covering the code 1 and the code to. However we sometimes include the code 3 items in with the quotation, because it can be something as silly as a sticker is required.

Having an electrical test carried out on the property and the report issued to the person asking for the report, this should be taken seriously. If you are the property owner and there are some faults highlighted, you should as a matter of course get these faults repaired or remedied.

As a responsible homeowner, and you neglect the findings in the report.   Should a fault occur or perhaps even worse a fire, where the fire investigation people find it was associated with an electrical fault, and they find that you have had an Electrical Inspection and not carried out the recommendations as stated in the report – you may find that your Iinsurance is invalid for the repairs of your home.

Thank you for attending my “Emergency Call out” there was smoke coming out of my socket. I telephoned at least 15 electricians after 7:15pm (in the evening) when we discovered the smoke coming out of the Socket. Their phones not even being answered. The next on my list was Bright Sparks, who were the only ones to answer the call - literally within a couple of rings, and was answered by a lovely lady who reassured me that help would be on the way. The Call was sent to your emergency electrician who called back within 15 minutes, and was able to attend within the hour, and fix the problem. Thank you. Excellent Service

I have always found Karen and her team at Bright Spark to be friendly, professional and reliable. Their quotes have been reasonably priced and provide a thorough breakdown of costs for replacements parts and labour. I highly recommend them.

Just to say a big thank you for the work that your electrician carried out at my mothers house. He was very professional and a clean worker and the finished job was a complete success. It is very comforting to know that when a tradesperson attends the property of a elderly customer that they feel safe and happy. Once again, Thanks Keith

Karen recently came to our place on a Sunday afternoon when our kitchen suddenly lost all power. She found and fixed the problem with the breaker very quickly, and also checked the others. She did a great job and we were very pleased to get it fixed so quickly! I recommend her to friends, and will definitely call her the next time we need an electrician.

"In June 2018 Karen and one of her team fitted some new lights in my kitchen ceiling. I was really pleased with the work. The job was done efficiently and tidily. I was kept informed of arrival time and I was impressed with the service I received. Thanks for a great job. Lucy"
