The sound of electrical crackling noise in sockets is not an uncommon problem. However, it could lead to a more dangerous situation.
The reason for this is that when the socket was installed, the screws holding the wires in the socket were terminated, but they may have worked loose.
We are all aware in electrical terms of Watts, Amps, & Voltage, but the frequency is also measured in Hertz.
This Frequency is in the UK is 50 Htz.
Hertz is frequency, and also Vibration. You can't see it, you can't, but over time this minimal vibration can work screws & wires loose.
The crackling electricity of this is the wires vibrating/wobbling in the terminations. The wires, then start arcing against the Metal conductive parts, resulting in the crackling and heat build up. It can also result in a small fire or burning in the socket outlet.
Other signs to look out for a brown markings around the receptacles where the plugs are put into and also cracking.
It may be found that even putting in an appliance plugged into the socket, the appliance does not work.
Along the same theme, the crackling electric socket, can be due to a faulty plug top which is in the socket, things to look out for here is the pins that go into the socket, they could be black and burnt, or even the plug top could have started to melt. You can see this from the plug top up, or even underneath where the pins are in the plug top.
An acrid smell of “fish”, may come from the socket and plug.
Don’t leave this for long periods of time, get it dealt with ASAP. Before further damage can be made, or a serious fire develop.
In all cases, it is best to remove the plug from the socket, and seek electrical advice from a registered electrician.
The electrician will inspect the plug, and the socket. They will need to replace the socket, and perhaps extend the wires in the socket in order for it to operate correctly.
